Chapter 1 – Angel in the Dark
Ellie Matthews never planned on becoming the kind of girl men whispered about in locker rooms, dorm hallways, and behind expensive whiskey glasses.
She definitely never planned on becoming the kind of girl who danced under neon lights while strangers threw money at her body like it meant nothing.
But plans were for people with options.
And Ellie Matthews had run out of those a long time ago.
The bass from the nightclub speakers rattled through the walls of her dressing room, vibrating through the cheap metal lockers, the cracked mirrors, and the thin wooden floor beneath her heels. Every beat felt like a countdown. Every second that passed brought her closer to midnight.
Closer to losing everything.
Ellie stared at herself in the mirror.
A stranger stared back.
Heavy eyeliner. Crimson lips. Long platinum hair that was not hers. A black lace mask that covered the upper half of her face. Glitter brushed across her collarbones. A tiny silver outfit that revealed far more skin than dignity.
Angel.
That was who men paid for.
Not Ellie Matthews.
Not the scholarship student from Flynn College who spent her mornings buried in textbooks and her afternoons pretending not to hear rich girls whispering trailer trash whenever she passed them in the hall.
Not the girl who stretched ramen noodles into three meals.
Not the girl who slept four hours a night because life refused to give her more.
No.
Tonight she was Angel.
And Angel needed ten thousand dollars.
Ellie gripped the edge of the makeup counter until her knuckles turned white.
Ten.
Thousand.
Dollars.
By tomorrow.
Or she was done.
Done with Flynn College.
Done with her scholarship.
Done with the future she had clawed and bled for.
A hard knock hit her dressing room door.
“Angel. VIP in fifteen.”
Ellie closed her eyes.
Fifteen minutes.
The voice on the other side belonged to Crystal, one of the older dancers who had been working at the club for years.
“You hear me?”
“I heard you.”
“Then stop looking like someone died.”
The footsteps faded.
Ellie let out a shaky breath and reached for the folded letter sitting beside her makeup bag.
She already knew every word.
She could recite it in her sleep.
Outstanding balance due: $10,000. Failure to remit payment by end of business tomorrow will result in immediate academic withdrawal.
She crushed the paper in her fist.
“Not happening.”
She didn’t survive eighteen years of being poor, invisible, underestimated, and laughed at just to lose now.
Not when she was this close.
Not when graduation was finally starting to feel real.
Not when writing was the one thing that ever made her feel like maybe she belonged somewhere.
A knock came again.
This time impatient.
“Angel. Move your ass.”
Ellie stood.
Her heels clicked against the floor as she walked toward the mirror one last time.
She leaned forward.
“Tonight,” she whispered to her reflection, “you’re not Ellie.”
Her masked reflection smiled back.
She walked out.
The backstage hallway buzzed with movement. Music pounded louder now. Girls adjusted costumes. Bartenders shouted drink orders. Security guards moved through the crowd like silent shadows.
The Gentleman’s Club was the only nightclub in town.
It was also the only place that paid enough for Ellie to survive.
And tonight…
It might be the only thing standing between her and losing her future.
Crystal caught her arm as she passed.
“You okay?”
Ellie nodded.
Crystal narrowed her eyes.
“That means no.”
“I’m fine.”
“Bull.”
Ellie gave her a tired smile.
“I have a private booking.”
Crystal’s expression changed instantly.
“The VIP?”
Ellie nodded.
Crystal whistled.
“He paid insane money.”
“How insane?”
Crystal held up both hands.
Ellie’s stomach dropped.
“Ten?”
Crystal smirked.
“Ten.”
For one night.
One private dance.
One stranger.
Ellie felt her pulse spike.
Ten thousand dollars.
Exactly what she needed.
Crystal squeezed her shoulder.
“Whatever happens in there…”
She leaned closer.
“Make him want more.”
Ellie swallowed hard.
Then she walked toward the VIP hallway.
The noise of the club faded with every step.
The hallway became quieter.
Darker.
More expensive.
The carpet turned red.
The walls turned black.
Soft golden lights lined the ceiling.
And at the very end…
A single door.
VIP Suite.
Ellie stopped in front of it.
Her heart hammered.
She’d done private dances before.
But something about tonight felt different.
Like fate was waiting on the other side.
She raised her hand.
Knocked twice.
A deep voice answered.
“Come in.”
Ellie froze.
That voice.
Something about it…
Familiar.
She pushed the thought away and opened the door.
The room was dimly lit, luxurious, private.
Leather furniture.
A private bar.
Floor to ceiling windows.
And one man.
He sat alone in the shadows.
Tall.
Broad shoulders.
Dark tailored suit.
One ankle resting over the opposite knee.
A glass of whiskey in one hand.
The city lights behind him framed his silhouette like something dangerous.
Ellie stepped inside and closed the door.
The lock clicked.
And suddenly…
She couldn’t breathe.
Because now she could see his face.
Sharp jaw.
Dark hair.
Cold blue eyes.
Eyes she had seen before.
Every Monday.
Every Wednesday.
Every Friday.
In lecture halls.
Across crowded classrooms.
At Flynn College.
Professor Jackson Steel.
Ellie’s blood turned to ice.
No.
No.
No.
This couldn’t be happening.
He studied her with lazy intensity.
Then he smiled.
Slowly.
Dangerously.
“Well.”
His voice sent chills down her spine.
“You took your time.”
Ellie forced herself to move.
Forced herself to breathe.
He didn’t recognize her.
He couldn’t.
The wig.
The mask.
The makeup.
Her voice.
He couldn’t know.
She walked closer.
Every step felt like stepping toward disaster.
She stopped a few feet away.
“My name is Angel.”
Jackson’s gaze traveled slowly over her body.
Painfully slow.
Then back to her eyes.
“Angel.”
He repeated it like he was tasting it.
Ellie’s pulse stumbled.
Jackson took a sip of whiskey.
Then leaned forward.
“You look familiar.”
Her stomach dropped.
She forced a playful smile.
“I get that a lot.”
His eyes darkened.
“No.”
He stood.
And Ellie suddenly remembered just how tall he was.
How commanding.
How intimidating.
In class, he made students shake with a single look.
In private…
He was even worse.
Jackson walked toward her.
Slow.
Controlled.
Predatory.
Ellie fought the urge to back away.
He stopped inches from her.
Close enough to smell expensive cologne and whiskey.
Close enough to feel his heat.
His eyes searched hers.
“There’s something about you.”
Ellie’s heart pounded so hard it hurt.
He tilted his head.
“Something I can’t stop thinking about.”
Her throat went dry.
She forced herself to stay in character.
“Maybe you just need a better distraction.”
A slow grin spread across his face.
“Oh?”
Ellie stepped closer.
Her hands found his shoulders.
Firm.
Warm.
Dangerous.
She leaned toward his ear.
“For the right price…”
She whispered.
“I can be whatever you want.”
Jackson’s jaw tightened.
His hands remained at his sides.
But his eyes…
His eyes burned.
“How much?”
Ellie looked straight into his eyes.
And took the biggest gamble of her life.
“Ten thousand dollars.”
Silence.
Then…
Jackson smiled.
Not amused.
Interested.
Dangerously interested.
“You’re expensive.”
Ellie swallowed.
“I’m worth it.”
Jackson stared at her.
Long.
Hard.
Then he set his whiskey down.
And stepped even closer.
“So tell me, Angel…”
His voice dropped low.
“What exactly are you willing to do…”
His fingers slowly reached toward her mask.
“…to keep your secrets?”
Ellie stopped breathing.
