What makes a romance dark

Dark romance isn’t one trope so much as a temperature. The hero is rarely a good man in the ordinary sense. He might be the person sent to ruin her, a rival, a criminal or simply someone whose methods are hard to forgive. The stories deal openly with betrayal, obsession, danger and grief, and they don’t promise that anyone comes out clean.

What keeps it romance is the arc. However dark the start, the relationship moves toward something both people choose.

Enemies to lovers, turned up

Enemies to lovers is everywhere in dark romance because the genre takes the “enemies” part seriously. The hero may have real reasons to destroy the heroine, or real blood on his hands, and the slow shift from threat to trust is the main event.

How to choose

Read each blurb with an eye on the hero’s role. If he is the enemy, the saboteur or the threat, expect trust to be earned slowly and painfully. If he is the protector from a dangerous world, as in mafia romance, the darkness sits around the couple rather than between them.
