Chapter 1 — The Pregnancy and the Text

The first lie Giselle ever told the world was her name.

Not because she enjoyed deception. Not because she wished to manipulate anyone.
But because sometimes the only way to live quietly… was to disappear.

So Lady Giselle von Howard—only daughter of one of the most powerful noble families in the country—became simply Giselle, a woman no one important would bother to notice.

For three years, that lie had been her shelter.
For three years, it had also been her prison.

And on a gray morning that smelled faintly of antiseptic and rain, the fragile life she had built inside that lie began to fracture.

The clinic was quiet, almost painfully so.

White walls. Soft fluorescent lighting. The distant beeping of machines that measured other people’s hopes. Giselle sat on the narrow examination bed with both hands folded in her lap, fingers curled together as if she were afraid they might drift apart on their own.

She had always hated hospitals.
Too many memories of fear.
Too many reminders that love could disappear without warning.

“Just a routine physical,” the nurse had said kindly.
“Nothing to worry about.”

Nothing to worry about.

Giselle almost smiled at the thought. If only worry could be dismissed so easily.

The door opened with a gentle click, and the doctor stepped inside holding a clipboard. He was middle-aged, calm-faced, the kind of man who had spent decades delivering both miracles and disasters in the same steady tone.

He glanced at the chart, then at her.

“Well,” he said, voice warm, “everything looks normal.”

Relief loosened something tight in her chest—so sudden it almost hurt.

Then he added, casually, as if discussing the weather:

“And… congratulations. You’re pregnant.”

The word landed without sound.

Pregnant.

For a moment, the world simply… stopped.

“I’m… what?” Her voice came out thin, unfamiliar, like it belonged to someone standing far away.

“About seven weeks,” the doctor continued gently. “Still early. The first trimester can be delicate, so you’ll need plenty of rest, good nutrition, minimal stress.”

Minimal stress.

If only he knew.

Giselle’s hand drifted slowly to her abdomen, fingers trembling before they even touched the fabric of her dress. There was nothing there yet. No curve. No sign.

And yet—

A life.

Her child.

A warmth spread through her chest, fragile and luminous, like the first spark of sunrise after endless night. Tears blurred her vision before she realized she was crying.

She hadn’t thought this was possible.
Not after everything.
Not after the quiet distance that had grown between her and Patrick these past months.

But maybe… maybe this could change things.

Maybe this child could bring them back to each other.

Hope was a dangerous thing.
Still, it rose anyway.

“I need to tell my husband,” she whispered.

The doctor smiled. “I’m sure he’ll be thrilled.”

Yes, she thought.
He will be.

He has to be.

Outside, the sky had begun to drizzle—fine silver rain that softened the city into something almost gentle.

Giselle stepped beneath the clinic awning and pulled out her phone, heart beating too fast, fingers shaking as she opened their message thread.

Patrick.

Her husband.
The man she had chosen over wealth, status, even family.
The man she had believed was worth everything.

For three years, she had endured cold glances, sharp words, quiet humiliations from his family—smiling through all of it because she loved him.

Because love was supposed to mean staying.
Fighting.
Believing.

She typed slowly:

Patrick… I’m pregnant.

She stared at the words for a long moment, cheeks warm despite the rain.
Then she pressed send.

The message delivered instantly.

For a heartbeat, the world felt suspended between past and future.

She imagined his reaction—surprise first, then joy.
Maybe he would rush to see her.
Maybe he would finally hold her the way he used to.

Maybe this would fix everything that had been breaking in silence.

The phone vibrated in her hand.

Her breath caught.

He replied so quickly.
He must care.
He must—

She opened the message.

And the world ended in a single line of text.

I don’t want your baby.
Becky is the only one I want to have children with.
Get rid of it.

The rain kept falling.

Cars kept moving.

Somewhere, someone laughed.

But inside Giselle, something vast and fragile shattered without sound.

She didn’t remember falling.

Only the feeling of the ground rushing upward.
The sudden absence of air.
Darkness swallowing everything.

When awareness returned, it came slowly—like surfacing from deep water.

“…fainted from emotional shock,” someone was saying.
“…only about twenty minutes…”

The clinic ceiling blurred above her.
Her body felt distant, heavy, as if it no longer fully belonged to her.

But the pain—

The pain was sharp. Clear. Merciless.

Not physical.

Worse.

Her hand moved weakly toward her stomach again.

The child was still there.
Still alive.
Still innocent.

Unlike the man who had created it.

A sound escaped her throat—half breath, half broken sob. She turned her face away so no one would see.

Because dignity was the last thing she had left.
And she would not lose that too.

Patrick hadn’t always been like this.

That was the cruelest part.

Once, he had held her hand during blood tests because she was afraid of needles.
Once, he had looked at her as if she were the only person in the world.
Once, he had promised:

“I’ll protect you. Always.”

Promises were easy.
Keeping them was not.

When had it changed?

When had love turned into indifference…
And indifference into cruelty?

Maybe the signs had always been there.
Maybe she had simply refused to see them.

Because loving someone often meant believing the best version of them…
Even when reality whispered otherwise.

By the time Giselle left the clinic, the rain had grown heavier.

Cold drops soaked through her sleeves, slid down her neck, blurred the city into streaks of gray.

She didn’t open an umbrella.

Didn’t call a car.

Didn’t even wipe her tears.

She just walked.

One step after another.
Like someone moving through the ruins of a life that no longer existed.

Pregnant.

Rejected.

Alone.

The words echoed in her mind with unbearable clarity.

Yet beneath the grief… something else stirred.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Just a quiet, aching realization:

She had given up everything for Patrick Hilton.
Her title.
Her family’s protection.
Her own identity.

And in return—

He had told her to erase their child.

Thunder rolled faintly in the distance.

Giselle stopped beneath a streetlight, breath trembling, rain dripping from her hair and lashes. For the first time since reading the message, she allowed herself to truly feel it.

The betrayal.
The humiliation.
The unbearable, suffocating heartbreak.

A sob tore free despite her efforts to hold it back.
Then another.

She pressed a hand to her mouth, shoulders shaking silently in the empty street.

No one saw.

No one came.

Because this was the choice she had made—
to live without the power her name carried.

To love as an ordinary woman.

And ordinary women…
broke alone.

After a long time, the tears slowed.

Not because the pain lessened.
But because something colder began to settle beneath it.

A stillness.

A question.

If love demanded she destroy her own child…
was it ever love at all?

Her fingers curled slowly over her abdomen, protective now instead of uncertain.

“No,” she whispered hoarsely.
“I won’t.”

The words were fragile.
But real.

For the first time that day, her spine straightened slightly.

Because even if Patrick rejected her…
even if the world turned its back…

She was not alone anymore.

She had someone to protect.

Far away, in a world of marble halls and guarded gates, the von Howard family still believed their lost princess was living quietly, stubbornly clinging to a love unworthy of her.

They did not yet know—

That love had just died.

And from its ashes…

Something far more dangerous would rise.

Rain continued to fall over the city.

Washing away footprints.
Hiding tears.
Preparing the world…

For the return of a queen.
